Background of the study
Forensic anthropology is integral to the investigation of skeletal trauma, especially in cases linked to domestic violence. In Ikwuano Local Government Area, Abia State, domestic violence has resulted in numerous cases where skeletal injuries require detailed forensic analysis for legal resolution. Techniques such as fracture analysis, bone pathology, and imaging are employed to interpret trauma patterns and determine the cause of injuries (Ude, 2023). Recent technological advances have improved the precision of trauma analysis; however, challenges persist due to limited forensic facilities, societal stigma, and underreporting of domestic violence incidents (Okoro, 2024). This study investigates the impact of forensic anthropology on solving skeletal trauma cases, aiming to enhance the accuracy of trauma interpretation and support judicial processes. By integrating clinical evidence with forensic analysis, the research seeks to provide robust evidence that can aid in prosecuting domestic violence cases and delivering justice to victims (Chinwe, 2025). The findings are anticipated to inform policy reforms, improve forensic practices, and raise awareness about domestic violence issues in the region. The study will employ case studies, laboratory experiments, and interviews with forensic experts to develop improved protocols for trauma analysis, ultimately enhancing judicial outcomes and community support more effectively.
Statement of the problem
Despite advancements in forensic anthropology, skeletal trauma cases linked to domestic violence in Ikwuano face significant challenges. Limited forensic facilities, societal stigma, and underreporting impede accurate trauma analysis and victim identification (Ude, 2023; Okoro, 2024). The complexity of fracture patterns and degradation of remains further complicate forensic interpretations (Chinwe, 2025). These issues hinder the delivery of justice and compromise the reliability of legal evidence. This study addresses the critical gaps in current forensic practices related to domestic violence cases, aiming to develop improved methods that enhance both judicial outcomes and community support. Prompt, effective solutions needed.
Objectives of the study:
To assess the current forensic methods in analyzing skeletal trauma linked to domestic violence.
To identify challenges affecting the accuracy of trauma interpretation in forensic cases.
To propose strategic improvements to enhance forensic analysis and support judicial outcomes.
Research questions:
What forensic techniques are used in analyzing skeletal trauma in domestic violence cases?
What challenges hinder accurate interpretation of trauma evidence in Ikwuano?
How can forensic methodologies be improved to better support legal investigations in domestic violence cases?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Advanced forensic techniques significantly improve trauma analysis accuracy in domestic violence cases.
H2: Limited forensic resources and societal stigma negatively affect forensic interpretation.
H3: Strategic improvements in forensic methods will enhance judicial outcomes and community support.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical challenges in forensic analysis of skeletal trauma related to domestic violence. The research will provide insights into improving forensic methodologies, thereby supporting more accurate legal evidence and enhancing judicial outcomes. Findings are expected to inform policy reforms, improve forensic training, and raise awareness about domestic violence, ultimately contributing to community support and justice for victims.
